Yahoo Mail plays nice with Facebook

06

March

Yahoo Mail users can add their Facebook friends’ e-mail addresses to their Contacts list, Yahoo announced Thursday. The move reflects Yahoo’s desire to capitalize on the fast-growing social-networking market.

Yahoo Mail now includes a Facebook option in the e-mail program’s Import Contacts pane. After users input their Facebook user name and password to give Yahoo Mail access to their profile, the e-mail program will import all their Facebook friends’ e-mail addresses into their Contacts list.

The integration of Facebook friends into Yahoo Mail is part of Yahoo’s broader strategy to add Facebook Connect, a service from the social network that allows users to integrate elements of their Facebook profiles into third-party sites, to more of its Web properties.

But Yahoo isn’t stopping at Facebook. Last month, the company announced a partnership with Twitter that would allow the sites to share content. Users will be able to check their Twitter profiles from Yahoo sites later this year.

Removing date from Wordpress posts

18

February

Wordpress is slowly growing usage not only in blogs but also fully fledged websites maily because of its user interface backend which is releatively easier to grasp for for web administrators.
Its usage on non blog websites poses poses a problem in that every post has a time stamp on it indicating the authour, category and date when the post was published, (nothing wrong with that) but if content is not often changed we wouldnt want people to see a times stamp which is six months old (would you?)
Now, how do we go about removing the time stamp ?

To do so, go into the Theme Editor and select the single.php and Main Index templates and take out this code:

< ?php the_time(‘F j, Y’); ? >

For more information on this tag, go the WP Codex page here.

When Google Controls your life

10

February

Perhaps the story of the moment concerns Google’s newly launched service , Google Buzz , set to revolutionally change the world of social networking .
I have been thinking , It really is quite surprising  how much Google knows about our businesses, adverts we should see, directions to take to my next appointment of the day, personal lives, organize my documents and memos , manage my appointment, search habits and even what we like to do on the weekend – if you are signed in to your Google account that is.  For some of us we earn a substantial monthly income from Google Adsense.

The Google Dashboard essentially summarises everything you do within all the Google products that includes:

  • Gmail
  • Calendar
  • Docs
  • Web History
  • YouTube
  • Orkut
  • Picasa
  • Reader
  • Alerts
  • Talk
  • Google Adsense
  • Google Maps

Is not concerning to people that Google knows what pictures you store in Picasa, what news articles you like to tune in to, what video’s you like to watch and who is emailing you? Given this, it is little wonder they have come up with Google Wave – set to revolutionise the world of communication.

Dope features in Joomla! 1.6

10

February

Joomla 1.6 is slowly but surely coming. I have to admit I am one supporter of Joomla and am eagerly , as always waiting for the full release date.  Lets now take a look at some of the features so far.

Improved template manager

Joomla! core member Andrew Eddie wrote in the following article about the new Template Manager in Joomla! 1.6. While there are some small improvements (like splitting up the template parameters into Basic Parameters and Advanced Parameters) the biggest feature seems to be Template Styles. Instead of just assigning a Joomla! template only once to a couple of pages through Page Assignment, with Joomla! 1.6 you can create multiple styles and assign each style to certain pages. Even though it has been practices in some Joomla! templates where we see options of changing background color or page width, it was , however not fully intergrated in the Joomla! system.

An example: Let’s say you have a Joomla! template which offers a parameter to switch the overall color of the website (red, green and blue). Now, if you want to simulate various sections in your site, you might want section 1 to have a red color, section 2 to have a green color and section 3 to have a blue color. Because Joomla! 1.5 only allows you to assign a full template to certain pages, the only workaround is to make three copies of the same template.

Syntax highlighting when editing index.php

A major improvement is also the syntax highlighting when editing code through the Template Manager. With Joomla! 1.5 we always recommend web developers to use a separate HTML-editing program (like Dreamweaver) and then upload the files through FTP to Joomla!. One of the main reasons for this is syntax highlighting, which adds nice colouring to all HTML-code, CSS-code and JavaScript-code, so web developers can reckognize tags easily.

Now with Joomla! 1.6 the Template Manager offers syntax highlighting – making it much easier to modify templates through the Joomla! Administrator panel.

Redirect System Plugin

One other feature of Joomla! 1.6 is the Redirect System Plugin, which is accompanied by the Redirection component. The plugin allows for redirection of 404-pages to other pages. Instead of just showing an ugly red error-box when a page could not be found, the Redirection functionality allows you to configure destination URLs to which the visitor should be redirected.

So much to look forward to the new version

What is Bloogle ?

04

February

Over the past few weeks I’ve had many questions from friends alike asking me the meaning for my choice of name for my blog. Well, let me say it took a deep thought and the word derived from:

“Bl” – For Blog (This is a Blog)
“oogle” – From Google which is not only the search engine of the moment, but basically now controls the internet (yes it does )

So combining the two comes up with “Bloogle” which means searching Blogs using Google.
Thats it No more questions on this subject.

Work from Home Rubbish

03

February

While thinking about making money on the internet, it’s also important to note how to avoid losing it too. While there are many legitimate ways to make money at home, there are far too plenty ways one can get scammed on the internet. Recruiting people to stuff envelopes, or send mass mails  is the oldest work-from-home gimmick that fools people every day. Real work from home opportunities are abundant. But, the Internet has become a breeding ground for get-rich-quick schemes

Am sure you have seen adverts which look like this one of these days.
R2,000-R50,000+pm.Part/Full Time
Full training & ongoing support

Smart Woman Work @ Home
Around the kids using your PC
earn R 5 000+ part-time/full-time

Work From Home
Earn an Extra R500-R5000pm p/t
Alot more fulltime!

Whiles most of these look too good to be true , complaints filed against companies offering work-at-home scams has more than doubled in the last few years. As more job seekers get online, these scams thrive. Generally, outside of the Internet, advertisements for work-at-home opportunities are also found in the classified sections of local newspapers, magazines and other publications.
While not all offers are phony, many are.I  can’t say that there are absolutely NO legitimate “envelope stuffing” jobs or work from home jobs , but I have NEVER seen one in all my life.
Many legitimate direct sales companies and others that help you start your own business require a start-up fee to cover the cost of training manuals and supplies to get you going, the so called “start up kit” . But before mailing a check or submitting a credit card payment after reading hype on a website, consider the following factors:

  • Never send money if you can’t talk to a person. No phone number on the website, but the person or company is promising you big money?
  • Do not reveal e-mail and online banking passwords or personal information. What do they want the information for ?
  • What’s A Processing Fee?
  • Testimonials Are Just Words Unless VerifiedGenuine Work from Home

I have personally earned money from home through proven methods like Google Adsense, Adgator and Traffic Synnegy. Scammers have also started targeting unaware people by selling “Google Adsense Starter Kits”.
With Google Adsense alone I have earned at least R50 000 for the mast year and a half and thats proof enough of genuine “work from home” which works.

In the end, only you can decide if an opportunity is right for you or not. Do your own due diligence. I wouldn’t be willing to pay any form of money in hopes of making money unless I could talk to someone about all of my questions and concerns. Remember that some people make thousands o selling cosmetics and they’re rewarded with Cars. Even though Avroy Shlain is a very legitimate company with an honorable money-making opportunity, that doesn’t mean it is for everyone. The same holds true for all ” work from home” opportunities. Only you can decide if it’ll work for you.

Dispute over concept of the Dating website

22

January

TP Tower Swaziland dating websiteA Christian Dating Website was recently launched in Swaziland, the Website TPTower was launched by local web designers Aqua Designs. However Todays Times of Swaziland reports that :

There is now a battle over the concept of the Christian online dating website.

This comes after the founder of The Tower of Prayer Ministry, Kenneth Nkambule, distanced his ministry from the locally developed online Christian dating website because he believes it should have been shut down, but has suddenly reappeared.

Nkambule said the website’s domain name, www.tptower.org, and the whole concept, was his creation for The Tower of Prayer Ministry, a ministry which he says to date is still run by him.

“I approached Aqua Designs with the website design for my online Christian ministry for them to host the website (uploading the design to the internet) and this was in January last year,” said Nkambule. He said initially the website was to preach online as well as provide prayer to members of his church.

“It was then that I decided on the online dating concept which I attached onto the site, but later discarded that idea as the Holy Spirit was against it,” explained Nkambule. “My ministry then experienced financial constraints and, therefore, couldn’t pay my subscriptions to the website host which led to the site being suspended on the net,” he said.

That almost sums it up. I did a simple whois search of the domain and realised that the domain is actually registered in the name of the web designers which means legally they are the owners of the domain and are entitled to use the domain as they wish which is lesson number one for website owners.

Most website are shocked to learn that they don’t legally own their own domain names. After all, they paid to have the website created in the first place, plus pay ongoing fees for web hosting and domain registration. How can they not be the owner if they’re footing all the bills?

What commonly happens is that when your web design company created your website, they took care of registering the domain for you. While registering the domain however, they listed themselves, not you, as the Registrant (i.e. owner).

Why would they do that? Giving them the benefit of the doubt, I suppose it’s possible that they just don’t know better. A more cynical view, however, would be that they do it to keep you “hostage” to using their services forever (or at least make it difficult for you to switch).

Would you give a construction company the title to your land?

If all this talk about domains and contacts is still a little fuzzy, let’s compare it to a more familiar situation. Say you’re having a house built. Imagine that the builder said to you, “Hey, just sign your deed over to me so that I can take care of all those annoying details like applying for permits, etc. But don’t worry, I’ll let you live on the land after the house is built and use it just like you still legally owned it.” You’d think that was a ludicrous proposition of course, regardless of how well you knew and trusted the builder.

Well, the same goes for letting somebody else own your domain, regardless of how much you trust them.

Facebook Blocked ? Use Email Instead

22

January

With hundreds of corporates now joining the bandwagon of blocking facebook to its employees many people are faced with a huge problem. I personally am totally against any kind of blocking or censoring as such as it amounts to controlling adults.
Now Back to the story … how can one now access facebook when its blocked.

Unless you have changed your settings to stop email notifications, it’s likely that you receive an email every time someone comments on your status updates, photos, videos and Wall posts. Before now, the email contained a link that you had to follow, which logged you into Facebook where you could reply. You’ll now notice that the email contains a line reading “New Feature: Reply to this email to comment on this link.”

Now, the site has made it possible for you to respond to these comments directly, by hitting the reply button. All you have to do is enter your response and hit send, and Facebook will add your comment to the site.In addition, one is also given a personalised facebook e-mail address to post status updates, and images onto his/her profile.

This is big news for all those Facebook junkies out there who can’t get their daytime fix while at work because of a company firewall, not to mention all the students who can’t check their Facebook for several hours every day. We’ll see where productivity levels go after this.

The End of Free to Air for Non-SA Viewers ?

18

January

South Africa began broadcasting a digital terrestrial signal alongside its analogue signal in November 2008.

This “dual illumination” window period is due to end with a final switch-off of the analogue signal on 1 November 2011.

Local TV viewers have until then to acquire either a digitally compliant television set or the set-top box necessary to make their old TVs digitally compliant.

onsumers have two options when it comes to switching to digital TV: a set-top box that will convert the digital signal into an analog one, so an old analog set could be used; or the viewer could purchase a new digital television, which could set you back a few thousand rand.

An entry-level box converter will retail for R700, SABC’s Morning live today. Important to note however is that the set up box does not need a dish set.
What then becomes of neighboring countries who were accessing the signals using free to air decorders ? Millions of viewers in Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and other neighboring countries are enjoying the free signals using their decoders which it has been hinted that the signal will be  switched off soon.
I am one such person who is using one Philips decoder (I have a big feeling its not the real Philips) where I enjoy all SABC channels and a lot of gospel chanels, Sky news and France 24. Already ETV encrypted the signals for those viewers who were not using the free to air decoders.

Joomla Websites Still Showing 2009 footer

07

January

2009 having come and gone, I have noticed a lot of websites are still having a 2009 copyright footer. This should normally be an automated process which does not need to be manually updated each passing year. This is how you go about it.

If its defined in the template’s index.php file change To let it change it automatically each year, change

to
© <?php echo date(“Y”); ?>

or altenatively

Go to the root fold Of Joomla >> languages >>en-GB/ en-GB.mod_footer.ini || modify it there.
